Focusing on the “orientation” aspect of “sexual orientation” and the “orient” in “orientalism,” Ahmed examines what it means for bodies to be situated in space and time. Bodies take shape as they move through the world directing themselves toward or away from objects and others. Being “orientated” means feeling at home, knowing where one stands, or having certain objects within reach. Orientations affect what is proximate to the body or what can be reached. A queer phenomenology, Ahmed contends, reveals how social relations are arranged spatially, how queerness disrupts and reorders these relations by not following the accepted paths, and how a politics of disorientation puts other objects within reach, those that might, at first glance, seem awry. Ahmed proposes that a queer phenomenology might investigate not only how the concept of orientation is informed by phenomenology but also the orientation of phenomenology itself. Thus she reflects on the significance of the objects that appear—and those that do not—as signs of orientation in classic phenomenological texts such as Husserl’s Ideas. In developing a queer model of orientations, she combines readings of phenomenological texts—by Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, and Fanon—with insights drawn from queer studies, feminist theory, critical race theory, Marxism, and psychoanalysis. Queer Phenomenology points queer theory in bold new directions.

We, as in the general public, engaged citizens, humans of planet Earth… And we, Mouna Andraos and Melissa Mongiat, together with our team at Daily tous les jours, as we seek new models for living together. Welcome to our journal. We crave living in environments that support us, nourish us and inspire us. We dream of places to go through our lives together, inclusively and tolerantly. Can we re-enchant the raw material of our collective daily experiences? We have been creating interactive art and narrative experiences in public spaces around the world for fifteen years. Using music, dance, art, and other mediums to emphasize the joyful, whimsical, and unexpected, we create moments of connection and care between strangers. Through this book, we share our experience in building an emergent practice combining technology, storytelling, performance, and design, while asking fundamental questions to create meaningful work in a world in crisis. Meet us outside the urban masterplan, where we experiment with infrastructure for the human spirit.
9910268852709901 595 $$aThere is widespread consensus that we are living at the end—of democracy, of liberalism, of capitalism, of a healthy planet, of the Holocene, of civilization as we know it. In this book, drawing on radical futurisms and visions of justice-to-come emerging from the traditions of the oppressed—Indigenous, African-American, multispecies, anti-capitalist—as materialized in experimental visual cultural, new media, aesthetic practices, and social movements, T. J. Demos poses speculative questions about what comes after end-of-world narratives. He argues that it's as vital to defeat fatalistic nihilism as it is to defeat the false solutions of green capitalism and algorithmic governance. How might we decolonize the future, and cultivate an emancipated chronopolitics in relation to an undetermined not-yet? If we are to avoid climate emergency's cooptation by technofixes, and the defuturing of multitudes by xenophobic eco-fascism, Demos argues, we must cultivate visions of just futurity and multispecies flourishing.

[AI-G; E.B.].

Publikace byla vydána firmou Meinshausen v Rize v r. 1811. Autor, lotyšský chemik a profesor David Hieronymus Grindel (1776-1836), se v tomto svazku zaměřuje výhradně na chemii rostlinné říše (vegetabilií), tj. fytochemii. Podrobně zkoumá chemické složení rostlinných organismů, jejich látkovou přeměnu a vlastnosti organických sloučenin přírodního původu. Práce odráží dobový stav vědeckého poznání v Pobaltí (Livonsku) a tehdejším Ruském impériu v době před Wöhlerovou syntézou močoviny, kdy byla organická chemie ještě pevně spjata s konceptem životní síly (vis vitalis) v živých organismech. – Autor knihu rozdělil do několika kapitol podle tehdejšího chápání rostlinné chemie. Zahrnuty jou: 1. základní prvky rostlinné hmoty (uhlík, vodík, kyslík, dusík); 2. způsoby a formy kombinací základních prvků (uhlík, vodík, kyslík, dusík); 3. Rostlinné kyseliny (něm. Pflanzensäuren), rozebírá kyselinu octovou, jablečnou, citronovou aj.; 4. Specifické látky (cukr, škrob, guma, pryskyřice, korek a také rostlinný lepek (něm. Pflanzenleim). [AI-G; E.B.].

The work focuses on π-conjugated systems with tuneable emission, excited-state switching, and solid‑state fluorescence, mainly on far-red (FR) and near-infrared (NIR) emitting materials relevant for optoelectronics and bioimaging applications. Conducted research explores how intramolecular rotation, hydrogen bonding, aggregation, protonation, metal coordination, and crystal packing influence radiative and non‑radiative processes. Several classes of organic fluorescent materials were investigated, such as stimuli-responsive hydroxyphtalimides, phthalimide boron difluoride Schiff base complexes, polycyclic hydroxybenzimidazoles, azo‑phthalimide photoswitches, and push-pull substituted stilbenes. The theoretical background is supported by experimental results obtained by steady‑state and time‑resolved emission spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering measurements. The presented studies reveal control over excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) processes through restriction of molecular motion, investigate solvatochromic and mechanochromic behaviour, and show how studied materials exhibit environmental sensitivity. Finally, the work investigates visible‑light‑responsive materials with enhanced Z‑isomer stability and explore colour‑tuneable solid‑state fluorescence in crystalline stilbenes in relation to crystal packing and exciton localization. The work also explores a host-guest strategy for preparing water‑dispersible binary‑dye nanoparticles with intense FR and NIR emission, efficient energy transfer, and fluorescence brightness suitable for bioimaging applications. Through his wit, detailed characterization, and visual-verbal creativity, Herriman introduced even the least comically-inclined to the young medium; Gertrude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso, James Joyce, US President Woodrow Wilson, Jackson Pollock, Charlie Chaplin, Frank Capra, P.G. Wodehouse, Willem de Kooning—all KK fans among many others. It was thanks to media tycoon William Randolph Hearst, a confirmed fan who gave Herriman carte blanche in his newspapers, that the artist was allowed to freely explore countless absurd and melancholy variations on the theme of unrequited love for years on end. Herriman unabashedly took advantage of this, radically exploring the medium’s potential and pushing all of its formal boundaries; readers had to put up with surreal, Dadaist sceneries, a language that whirled slang, neologisms, phonetic spelling, and scholarly references, and diffuse gender roles—making Krazy Kat probably the first gender-fluid star in comic history. This volume presents all Krazy Kat color stories from 1935-1944 and a detailed introduction by comic expert Alexander Braun, who illuminates Herriman’s multi-ethnic background and reveals what makes this timeless work of art about a queer cat so extraordinary.

Her multidisciplinary practice leverages the experience of the body alongside personal and communal histories to explore and challenge notions of race, nationalism, authority and eroticism, among other subjects. Her meticulously compiled collages are densely layered, both in structure―through repetition of forms and figures―and in content, with an emphasis on politically loaded and libidinal images. Often inspired by history painting, these works are composed of images culled from magazines and archival texts, placed into an unsettling interplay. Williams considers these collages as a disintegration of photographic value into layered schematics. Similarly, Williams’ performance practice explores coded social choreographies, emphasizing structural and systemic violence. In her performances, disembodied segments of text become collages, making up scripts for her performers. Through this process she proposes what she calls experimental pedagogy, a "consumption of academic texts that have a non-discursive output, an affective output that mythifies―weaving what kinds of knowledge are immediately relatable to an individual with the creation of a paradigm of thought." A Surface is Williams’ first museum survey, offering visitors an in-depth experience of her vision and practice. The exhibition features both important and lesser-known works from the past decade of her career. Kandis Williams was born in 1985 in Baltimore, Maryland. She studied at the Cooper Union School of Art. In 2016 she cofounded Cassandra Press, a publishing and educational platform that produces and distributes Black scholarship.

In the nineteenth century, the kaleidoscope, the thaumatrope, the zoetrope, the stereoscope, and other optical toys were standard accessories of a middle-class childhood, used both at home and at school. In Playful Visions, Meredith Bak argues that the optical toys of the nineteenth century were the “new media” of their era, teaching children to be discerning consumers of media—and also provoking anxieties similar to contemporary worries about children's screen time. Bak shows that optical toys—which produced visual effects ranging from a moving image to the illusion of depth—established and reinforced a new understanding of vision as an interpretive process. At the same time, the expansion of the middle class as well as education and labor reforms contributed to a new notion of childhood as a time of innocence and play. Modern media culture and the emergence of modern Western childhood are thus deeply interconnected. Drawing on extensive archival research, Bak discusses, among other things, the circulation of optical toys, and the wide visibility gained by their appearance as printed templates and textual descriptions in periodicals; expanding conceptions of literacy, which came to include visual acuity; and how optical play allowed children to exercise a sense of visual mastery. She examines optical toys alongside related visual technologies including chromolithography—which inspired both chromatic delight and chromophobia. Finally, considering the contemporary use of optical toys in advertising, education, and art, Bak analyzes the endurance of nineteenth-century visual paradigms.

Drawing on fieldwork with gardeners, botanists, migrant workers, refugees, public officials, and nature enthusiasts while charting human and more-than-human worlds, Stoetzer offers a wide-ranging ethnographic portrait of Berlin’s postwar ecologies that reveals emergent futures in the margins of European cities. From its founding in 1933 and over its celebrated 23-year history, the small liberal arts school in rural North Carolina attracted a remarkable number of famous and soon-to-be famous artists, writers and visionaries including Anni and Josef Albers, Ruth Asawa, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Willem de Kooning, Buckminster Fuller, Ray Johnson, Charles Olson and M.C. Throughout the Depression and World War II it provided vital sustenance, while serving as a testing ground for self-sufficiency, communal living and collaboration―the most precious and precarious ingredient at the college. Through deep original research, The Farm at Black Mountain College follows renegade students, faculty and farmers as they establish a campus farm in the 1930s, build a better farm in the 1940s and watch it all collapse in the 1950s. We meet a new cast of BMC characters whose stories have seldom, if ever, been explored, and whose adventures in agriculture illuminate what exactly happened at BMC across the decades, from optimistic community building to its plunge into substance-addled scarcity. In these engrossing pages, we encounter the extraordinary folk whose endeavors on the land helped shape the Black Mountain College of myth and extraordinary reality.

It aims to recreate aspects of John Koza's foundational work in this field. The primary goal is to assess if GP can generate advanced electronic designs more effectively than traditional methods, adapting Koza's genetic operations—selection, crossover, mutation—to modern circuit design challenges. The methodology involves developing GP models to simulate evolutionary circuit design, evaluated through controlled experiments. These experiments test the models' ability to evolve from basic to complex configurations that meet specific electronic functions. This study not only revisits but also modifies Koza’s methods, incorporating strategies more reliant on an initial embryo setup to guide the evolution process in generating targeted designs. Additionally, the study investigates recent methodologies utilized in similar applications to enhance the adaptability and efficiency of GP. The results demonstrate that while GP can effectively support and enhance electronic circuit design for sinusoid oscillators and tone discriminators, its application to square oscillator generation encounters limitations and severe problems. This highlights areas for potential improvement in genetic diversity and algorithm refinement.$$9eng

The core contribution of this work is DGCNNwSub, a novel graph neural network based on the popular Dynamic Graph CNN (DGCNN), designed to classify 3D shapes represented as point clouds. DGCNNwSub extends the original architecture with a hierarchical pooling mechanism and a spatial transformer network for input alignment. The model was evaluated on the ModelNet40 dataset, achieving 91.8% overall accuracy and 88.3% mean class accuracy—results competitive with state-of-the-art methods. This work also presents experiments examining the model's robustness to non-uniform point distribution and misaligned input shape orientations. Additionally, to improve the model's transparency, input attribution methods were used to explain its decision-making process by identifying the most influential features of the input shape for the model's prediction.$$9eng

A custom sensing pen was developed using an ESP32 microcontroller, an MPU-6050 sensor, and force sensor, capable of real-time data logging. The static trajectory was extracted from a skeletonized image of the scanned signature, while dynamic information was obtained using the Madgwick filter and mapped onto the trajectory. Two replication methods were tested — a robotic arm and a 3D printer — with the latter enabling better replication of dynamic characteristics. The results demonstrate that combining static and dynamic data, a faithful replication of the signature can be achieved not only in terms of shape but also in terms of dynamics.$$9eng

Core contributions include a robust data serialization format and a minimal communication interface. The serialization format defines the DataChunk, identified by a cryptographic Hash constructed from SHA-256 and BLAKE3 outputs, PackedInt-encoded length, and Reed-Solomon parity. Data protection employs Deflate compression, ChaCha20-Poly1305 AEAD encryption—keyed by a hash of the serialized data with a key-derived nonce—and a custom Long Error Correction Code (Long ECC) featuring a self-correcting header and interleaved Reed-Solomon protection for the encrypted payload. A versatile HKey identifier facilitates data addressing. The communication protocol, operating between Ed25519-identified peers, specifies FETCH and PUT operations and incorporates a local reputation system. A modular Rust reference implementation utilizing iroh for QUIC-based peer-to-peer communication demonstrates the protocol’s viability, presenting a comprehensive solution for secure, resilient data exchange.$$9eng

The goal of this thesis was to develop a comprehensive analytical tool for shared bicycle transport in the city of Brno, enabling predictions of future availability. A predictive model, trained on historical data from bike-sharing service providers, reliably estimates the probability of a vehicle being present at a selected station at a specific date and time.

He alternates these portraits with discussions on how “nativist nationalist politicians” in Russia and Eastern Europe demonize European Union laws protecting LGBTQ rights, the spread of antihomosexual laws from Victorian England to the British colonies, the courting of “pink-dollar tourists” in Mexico City and Buenos Aires, the recent shift of public attention from gay issues to transgender ones, and the Vatican’s longstanding advocacy against the concept of gender as a social construct. Though the book at times feels more like a collection of magazine profiles rather than a cohesive whole, Gevisser’s non-Western point-of-view and exhaustive research provide essential perspective on the threads connecting gay, lesbian, and transgender communities worldwide. This impressive work is a must-read for anyone invested in social justice and LGBTQ rights.

Spanning film, fine art, poetry, and photography, these cultural forms—which Gopinath conceptualizes as aesthetic practices of queer diaspora—reveal the intimacies of seemingly disparate histories of (post)colonial dwelling and displacement and are a product of diasporic trajectories. Countering standard formulations of diaspora that inevitably foreground the nation-state, as well as familiar formulations of queerness that ignore regional gender and sexual formations, she stages unexpected encounters between works by South Asian, Middle Eastern, African, Australian, and Latinx artists such as Tracey Moffatt, Akram Zaatari, and Allan deSouza. Gopinath shows how their art functions as regional queer archives that express alternative understandings of time, space, and relationality. The queer optics produced by these visual practices creates South-to-South, region-to-region, and diaspora-to-region cartographies that profoundly challenge disciplinary and area studies rubrics. Gopinath thereby provides new critical perspectives on settler colonialism, empire, military occupation, racialization, and diasporic dislocation as they indelibly mark both bodies and landscapes.

Over a series of six lectures, Sennett presented social discourse as the foundation of democracy, and posited that our cities are uniquely positioned to either empower or constrict this discourse—and that the difference could lie in architecture and urban design. Now, over forty years later, as political polarization persists and its consequences arise in both new and familiar ways, Democracy and Urban Form revisits questions that remain relevant: If discourse is the foundation of democracy, how can the design of our cities empower and enable it?

Spanning more than four centuries, from the earliest records of the laboring classes in the country to today, Margaret Willes's research unearths lush gardens nurtured outside rough workers’ cottages and horticultural miracles performed in blackened yards, and reveals the ingenious, sometimes devious, methods employed by determined, obsessive, and eccentric workers to make their drab surroundings bloom. She also explores the stories of the great philanthropic industrialists who provided gardens for their workforces, the fashionable rich stealing the gardening ideas of the poor, alehouse syndicates and fierce rivalries between vegetable growers, flower-fanciers cultivating exotic blooms on their city windowsills, and the rich lore handed down from gardener to gardener through generations. This is a sumptuous record of the myriad ways in which the popular cultivation of plants, vegetables, and flowers has played—and continues to play—an integral role in everyday British life.

It begins with an evaluation of existing post-hoc interpretability methods, such as Attention-Rollout, AttCAT, and Grad-SAM, showing their limited effectiveness in token-level signal extraction on dataset comprising technical government domain texts. The prompting-based approach using GPT-4o achieved 17% higher performance; however, incorporating an LLM during retrieval is not feasible due to computational constraints. Subsequently, to both enable training an interpretable model, and leverage the strength of LLM, a large scale dataset with token-level annotations is constructed from the MS~MARCO dataset. Annotations are added using a carefully selected large language model, whose outputs are validated against human annotations. Next, a novel retrieval model, FGR-ColBERT, is proposed by extending the ColBERT architecture to incorporate token-level supervision. Three architectural variants are introduced, enabling trade-offs between retrieval effectiveness and computational or storage cost. Experiments show that the proposed FGR-ColBERT produces token-level scores that match or even exceed the alignment with human annotations provided by the distilled large language model, while retaining strong document retrieval performance, with a Recall@50 of 99.1% compared to ColBERT model trained solely for document retrieval. Additionally, the experiment demonstrates that presenting extracted spans—covering only 38% of the full passage tokens on average—improves the efficiency of relevance judgments, with only a marginal relevance judgment accuracy drop of 0.22. These results show that fine-grained interpretability can be achieved with minimal overhead and thus practical applicability.$$9eng

Experimentálně byl použit stejnosměrný výboj. Pomocí emisní spektrometrie byly měřeny vibrační populace neutrálních molekulárních stavů N2(B3Πg) a N2(C3Πu) a iontového stavu N2+(B2Σu+).

A DC discharge was used experimentally. Emission spectrometry was used to measure the vibrational populations of neutral molecular states N2(B3Πg) and N2(C3Πu) and the ionic state N2+(B2Σu+). The results show that the populations of neutral states increase with O2 concentration, while the ion population decreases. The emission maximum of the pink afterglow shifts to shorter times with increasing O2 concentration. At a reduced wall temperature (77 K), the intensity is 10-fold lower, and the maximum shifts to later times (the dependence on O2 is opposite to that at room temperature). A kinetic model of vibrational-translational energy transfer has been initiated.

Byly porovnány dvě metody plynové chromatografie (GC): přímé dávkování autosamplerem (GC-AS) a mikroextrakce pevnou fází (SPME-GC). Pomocí GC-AS byly látky identifikovány a kvantifikovány ve vzorcích. Z důvodu velké rozmanitosti vzorků nebylo možné vyvodit jednoznačné závěry o obsahu látek napříč destiláty. Porovnání metod ukázalo, že SPME-GC poskytuje nižší výsledky, pravděpodobně kvůli nezohledněnému kompetitivnímu efektu.

Two gas chromatography (GC) methods were compared: direct injection by autosampler (GC-AS) and Solid-Phase Microextraction (SPME-GC). The GC-AS method is fast, simple, and offers good precision (RSD 0.5–20%), but has low sensitivity (1−50 mg.l−1) making it suitable for quantifying components at higher concentrations. Its drawbacks include unsuitability for low concentrations and substances with boiling points close to ethanol. The SPME-GC method is more sensitive but more laborious and time-consuming. Aromatic compounds were identified and quantified in the samples using GC-AS. Due to the high diversity of the samples, no unambiguous conclusions could be drawn regarding substance content across the different distillates. The comparison showed that SPME-GC yielded lower results, likely due to an unaddressed competitive effect.

Though desperately poor, her life is full of simple pleasures, like playing hopscotch with her best friend from school, and having her mother brush her hair by the light of an oil lamp. But when the harsh Himalayan monsoons wash away all that remains of the family's crops, Lakshmi's stepfather says she must leave home and take a job to support her family. He introduces her to a glamorous stranger who tells her she will find her a job as a maid in the city. Glad to be able to help, Lakshmi journeys to India and arrives at "Happiness House" full of hope. But she soon learns the unthinkable truth: she has been sold into prostitution. An old woman named Mumtaz rules the brothel with cruelty and cunning. She tells Lakshmi that she is trapped there until she can pay off her family's debt-then cheats Lakshmi of her meager earnings so that she can never leave. Lakshmi's life becomes a nightmare from which she cannot escape. Still, she lives by her mother's words—Simply to endure is to triumph—and gradually, she forms friendships with the other girls that enable her to survive in this terrifying new world. Then the day comes when she must make a decision-will she risk everything for a chance to reclaim her life? Written in spare and evocative vignettes by the co-author of I Am Malala (Young Readers Edition), this powerful novel renders a world that is as unimaginable as it is real, and a girl who not only survives but triumphs.

Not with Jack, the star athlete who wants to really know her but still feels guilty over the role he played the night Anna’s body was discovered. And not with Peekay, the preacher’s kid with a defiant streak who befriends Alex while they volunteer at an animal shelter. Not anyone. As their senior year unfolds, Alex’s darker nature breaks out, setting these three teens on a collision course that will change their lives forever.

Kristina thinks she can control the urge, the addiction, the monster trying to drag her down. Now with a baby to care for, she's determined to be the one deciding when and how much, the one calling the shots. But the monster is too strong, and before she knows it, Kristina is back in its grips. She needs the monster to keep going, to face the pressures of day-to-day life. She needs it to feel alive. Once again the monster takes over Kristina's life and she will do anything for it, including giving up the one person who gives her the unconditional love she craves—her baby. A vivid portrait of a victim to addiction, this sequel to Crank is the continuing story of Kristina and her descent back to hell. Told in verse, it's a harrowing and disturbing look at addiction and the damage that it inflicts.

Aimed at bold designers, typographers, writers, and curious minds who thrive on provocation, Commentary on Approximations to the Object leads to a fundamental question: how does the flux between design and literature produce a distinct engagement with meaning? Bernstein’s Commentary on the oeuvre of Approximations to the Object, a nineteenth-century treatise attributed to Edmund Stone, explores the possibility that certain material objects may have prefigured particular literary modes of understanding. As long as this thesis persists, the commentary keeps the reader on edge, engaging in its own material logic, only to diverge from it—reaching a peak of utmost emancipation, ultimately to: comment on it. Harnessing historical gaps, predication, speculation, and the shifting boundaries between objects and texts, Bernstein’s textual and design inferences are far from incidental deviations. They propel the commentary into something beyond a mere study of influence, raising intriguing questions: What other objects might have influenced certain literary forms? How can the interplay between design and literature uncover the structures that shape interpretation and meaning? Why has Stone’s treatise remained overlooked for so many centuries? It is best read in nearly one sitting.

The research focuses on methods evaluating the quality of public spaces that can be digitized and more easily utilized in urban planning to create strategies for the sustainable development of cities and municipalities. For a more detailed examination of the possibilities of digitizing selected methods, a data logger — Wi Fi device in monitoring mode based on an Orange-Pi was developed to track the number of mobile phone connections of surrounding pedestrians. Based on the research, placing multiple data loggers at measurement locations allows for the filtering of collected data and thus monitoring the length of stay, repeated entries, and direction of movement of mobile phone users through the space. The research for the dissertation describes setting parameters to achieve optimal results in converting selected analogue methods to digital ones and suitable interpretation of collected data, including determining the percentage of mobile device captures to actual pedestrians. In the case studies, streets such as Panská, Minoritská, Česká, and squares like Zelný trh, Obilní trh, and Jakubské náměstí in Brno were monitored. The work aims to develop and test a data-logger that would simplify data collection and evaluation for observers. Furthermore, it aims to enable broader usability for monitoring the attendance of public spaces in cities and comparing their data. Simultaneously, it would allow for online data collection as a basis for public space studies in both top‑down and bottom-up design approaches or the creation of development strategies. Automatic data collection significantly facilitates data collection and subsequent data processing. The data-logger is designed as an open source device, thus freely usable by other users.$$9eng

It stresses the relevance of small-scale and decentralized spatial formats of local knowledge production to community building and embedded political decision-making in the context of the socio-ecological transition. It reinforces the role of both individual and collective action while proposing distributed assembly and proximity as core attributes in the production of the contemporary and future city. It calls for a revised form of spatial politics. Miessen’s ongoing research trajectory Cultures of Assembly was initially kicked off during a Harvard GSD fellowship in collaboration with Joseph Grima, in which the two architects investigated the sociopolitical dimension of (urban) spatial design. Observing the Kuwaiti cultural and social landscape with a specific interest in the politico-spatial phenomenon of Diwaniya, this distributed urban form of para-institutional assembly established a starting point for a long-term body of research. Diwaniya can be understood and interpreted in multiple ways. Beyond a techno-futuristic idea of progress, it presents a showcase of an alternative that attempts to imagine a model of a (more) solidary city. On the scale of a city, and in fact small country, it interrogates how we—as a society—can learn from and produce alternative formats of physical exchange, working towards realistic scenarios of decentralized decision-making and spatial justice. Agonistic Assemblies asks: how can spaces—both physical and virtual—be envisaged to create publics? How is collectivity and society being generated spatially and in terms of policy? How do we “practice” society as a bodily, spatial form, and how does this practice contribute to spatial justice? Are there specific spatial settings that can intensify these practices? What kind of spatial design can we imagine as platforms for change?

In Quantum Ecology, Stefano Calzati and Derrick de Kerckhove identify three technological ecologies—linguistic, digital, and quantum—to better understand today's shattered globalized contemporaneity and navigate the impact of soon-to-come quantum information technologies. Today's societies, based as they are on language and writing, face disruption brought on by digital transformation, which is not predicated on sharing meaning but on sheer computability. This produces what the authors call an “epistemological crisis.” From here, the book explores how emerging quantum computers and communication will trigger an even deeper existential shift based on quantum physics' principles of discreteness, uncertainty, and entanglement. Enriched with evidence from biology, anthropology, sociolinguistics, and information and cognitive sciences, the authors draw upon diverse case studies to sustain a convincing philosophical and political argument. The book's chapters move from a discussion about the coevolution of humans and language to the codependence of writing, thinking, and innovation, then proceed to investigate “datacracy,” the power of algorithms. Finally, the authors outline the looming psychocultural effects and geopolitical challenges of the nascent quantum technological paradigm.

Drawing on established physics, Coryn Bailer-Jones explores the various challenges of getting an uncrewed spacecraft to a nearby star within a human lifetime. In addition to propulsion methods such as nuclear rockets and laser sails, this book examines critical issues such as navigation, communication, and the interstellar medium. Starting from fundamental concepts, readers will learn how a broad spectrum of physics – ranging from relativity to optics, and thermodynamics to astronomy – can be applied to address this demanding problem. Assuming some familiarity with basic physics, this volume is a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to interstellar travel, and an indispensable guide for studying the literature on deep space exploration. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core."--Nakladatelská anotace

The study of liquid–liquid phase separation has attracted a lot of attention from disciplines such as cell biology, biophysics, biochemistry, and others trying to understand how, why, and what roles these condensates play in homeostasis and disease states in living organisms. This book's editor recruited a group of international experts to provide a current and authoritative overview of all aspects associated with this exciting area. Sections introduce membrane-less organelles (MLOs) and biomolecular condensates; MLOs in different sizes, shapes, and composition; and the formation of MLOs due to phase separation and how it can tune reactions, organize the intracellular environment, and provide a role in cellular fitness."--Nakladatelská anotace

9911370406609901 520 $$a"Mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence: basics of manifold theory is the first volume in a two‑part series. Together, they establish a unifying mathematical framework based on smooth manifold theory and Riemannian geometry - essential tools for representing, analyzing, and integrating the growing complexity of modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems and scientific models. Differential geometry now plays a central role across AI, biology, physics, and medicine. From deep learning, generative modeling, and manifold learning to reasoning algorithms and physical AI, manifolds offer a coherent geometric language that bridges theory and practice. This volume introduces key concepts - topological and smooth manifolds, Riemannian metrics, differential forms, Lie derivatives, and statistical geometry - alongside illustrative applications to data science, genomics, drug discovery, and AI‑driven systems. Unlike traditional texts, this book combines rigor with intuition, integrating formal theory, computational methods, and interdisciplinary insights, and is ideal for graduate students and professionals in mathematics, statistics, computer science, AI, physics, bioinformatics, and biomedical sciences. It also serves as a foundational reference for researchers developing AI systems grounded in geometry, scientific modeling, and data‑driven discovery."--Nakladatelská anotace
